4A Grade: Usually the European spruce we carry is from the Alps of Switzerland, but from time to time we have German spruce, Italian, and Ukranian spruce. In most cases the tops are cut from split billets, so runout, which is so often seen in European spruce, is minimal. (When one buys spruce from almost any of the European soundboard suppliers, typically one finds only about 50% of the wood is something they're willing to use.) Above picture is typical of the nice luster and bearclaw that we find with the 4A grade spruce we're offering.
3A Grade: This spruce is from the Alps we're told, and is a good quality 3A grade spruce. Much of it has a bit of bearclaw, but most of it is straight grained.
2A Grade: Most often our European spruce is from the Alps of Switzerland. But we also get spruce from the Carpathians, Urals, and Balkan ranges. It's usually cut from split billets, so runout, which is so often seen in European spruce, is minimal.
