About as striking a binding material as one could find, it's not easy to bend, nor plane, but it is seen more frequently these days. Frank Ford of Gryphon Stringed Instruments was visiting recently and he mentioned a guitar of Sergei De Jong's which had snakewood binding. He said the guitar was unusual in many respects, but that the binding made a big visual impact and the guitar was snatched up quickly. Snakewood is prone to checks and splits in the cants so that the yield is very low, hence the high prices. Above guitar by Woodly White of Portland, OR.
