The Panama rosewood (Dalbergia tucerencis) seems to be a favorite. Some liken it to the vintage Brazilian sound. In weight, stiffness, and tap it is very close, but I would say even more stable. And for the moment the price is pretty decent!
Above, Richard DiCarlo built a striking guitar of Indian rosewood using our student grade, which can run the gamut from coarse grained, light colored material to dark, beautiful, but with anomalies like knots, mineral, pinholes, etc. Note the unusual "shimmer" grain.
Left, classic builder, Steve Porter prefers the more "distinctive" Indian rosewood.
